SECURITY

Soap Making should be fun!

It is therefore essential that you minimise risks.

Following a few simple rules will help you to create a safer working space.

  • Children should ALWAYS be supervised.
  • Soap gets HOT and can BURN.
  • If you use a microwave remember that it will continue to get hot for a short while after it has pinged.
  • If using the soap blocks take care when cutting and always cut onto a block or solid surface.
  • Never cut into your hands.
  • Keep Essential Oils and Fragrances out of reach of Children
  • Always check that any oils or fragrances are suitable for soap making:
  • burning oils and perfumes are NOT suitable.
  • Do not exceed maximum levels when adding oils.
  • Never put oils into a plastic container.  Some oils can react.
  • Always read and follow the instructions on the labels of the products you are using.
  • Never use products for which you do not have the correct safety data.
  • "COLD PROCESS" SOAP MAKING (This website is about melt and pour soap making and other very low risk activities)IS NOT TAUGHT ON THIS SITE BUT WE HAVE INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION AS A FURTHER PRECAUTION.
  • If you are making "cold" or "hot" process soaps (i.e, not using an m&p base) you MUST ensure that the caustic soda or lye is stored safely out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always keep in original packaging will all of the safety instructions.
  • You must NEVER leave the made up solution in a container -cup-bottle- that could be drunk from: this can cause DEATH.  SEEK EMERGENCY AID AT ONCE.
  • If you are using caustic soda or lye, always wear protective goggles, mask and gloves as minimum protection and use in a well ventilated area.
  • Cold process soaps MUST be allowed the correct amount of time to cure! (They are caustic until fully cured and will burn the skin).  As a very rough guide, cold  process soap needs AT LEAST 4 weeks before they are safe.
  • Soap from your pans etc, should be disposed of by scraping out into a bin.  It should not be washed in sinks as it can block pipes and drains.

The suggestions above are intended only as a beginning.

Safe working is characterized by:

  • Preparing your area
  • Following instructions carefully
  • Cleaning away at once and appropriately.

SAFETY IS A HABIT!

IF IN DOUBT, CHECK IT OUT!
